General orders, 1888-1912.

General orders from the national president, from the Dept. of Illinois president and some circulars, mostly from Illinois. These give news and information regarding members, the veterans and their families, any activites supported by the Corps, use of funds, who and how helped, changes in the organizational structure and function and the national convention and changes in officers. Frequently they give a brief inspirational message and urge the member's continued support of their cause. Circulars usually pertain to a special cause or message. Memorial Day programs. Also includes general orders for the Sons of Union Veterans, 1891-1897.

National organization formed in 1883 at the Denver Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, as an auxiliary to that organization and to continue to "care for the Veteran and his dependent ones and to perpetuate the memory of their heroic dead". As the number of Corps grew, each state elected its own governing body, subordinate to the national governing body.
